RE: Satellite Internet Users

We went cheap and bought the tripod system back in 2005. With lots of practice it didn't take long to get ours set up. But we often were in heavily treed parks and it would take a little longer like 30 mins or more. :S
But we've finally decided it's time to put it all away and went with an AT&T USB card, Cradlepoint and booster. That way it's seconds to get online instead of 10-20 mins.
We're still using the tripod for our HD TV dish, but everything else is packed away throughout the RV until we decide what to do with it.

RE: Economy Downturn

What I was trying to say was you still have bills whether in a rig or a S&B, only the rig depreciates every year where as a home will most likely appreciate. So selling a home which is an investment and turning around and putting that money into a trailer which depreciates quickly is a scary thing to do.
Hope you don't think some of us FTer's are ganging up on you, BUT, we also seemed to lose more than gain owning houses. We've had to move because of the Economy or Employer more than once in the last 35+ years. Even wishing once that we could move our custom home from OR to GA on one occasion.
While that was impossible, we've now got the perfect home to do it in. It's 38' long and can move with a day's notice. Not only do we maintain a good income, by moving, but we also can change our expenses by choosing an RVPark with lower fees or park closer to the jobsite. What more could anyone want! :C

RE: What's on the floor inside of your door in the RV?

We have a small mat outside, steps covers, an entry rug inside and carpet runner from door to living area. But if someone (DH) doesn't wipe his feet, we'll still get dirt clumps, leaves, etc inside.

RE: Buyers remorse?

Well, we are still unpacking, and after throwing out a lot of stuff we should have gotten rid of years ago, we are finding room for the must haves. As for planning, I lost sleep deciding what would go where. I even had a diagram, and listed what would go where. I just underestimated all the junk we had accumulated. DH, said, the old RV raised about 4 inches when he finished unloading. I am finding areas that I do have a little more room, than I had in our old one. I think what really didn't help, was loosing so much space under the bed. On the good side of that, is that it was easy to just throw stuff under the bed and forget about it. There was a lesson learned there.
We just replaced a 36' Suite for a 38' with a slightly different floorplan. It wasn't our first time trading 5ers, we thought we'd be more organized than when we traded a 40' for the 36'. The first time, we emptied the basement onto a picnic table and moved everything else once we pulled in beside the new 5er. It took a good 3 "back breaking" hours!
This time, we rented a Penske truck and loaded it up with packed boxes and furniture that we were moving to the new RV. It took 3 days of packing and moving until it was totally empty. I couldn't believe how much stuff we had. We also took a few boxes to our kids and then filled up a son's SUV with more things when he came to help us move in.
Finally, a full month later, I think I've found a place for everything and don't even need a tote to place extra's in when we move anymore! But since we're accumulators, I know we'll need to continue to police ourselves to quit acquiring stuff. :S

RE: DirecTV - Anyone have National Channels and local channels?

We just added a DirecTV HD DVR reivers to our other DVR's. We get locals (but can only pick them up when we're close enough) and NY/LA nationals everywhere. DH called to see about getting HD version of NY/LA. Will be another 45 day or less wait and another $1.99 each. :S

RE: RV Park Washington D. C.

It's unanimous. We were there in 2007. Tried another park in the area first and went over to CHP after only one night.

RE: Something to ponder... from the other side

This is a great post. And that's exactly why when DH talks about the possiblity of buying a CG someday, I say, "NO, I'd rather not be tied down to one place!"

After we set up a Mail forwarding address, DH changed his DL address in FL. They also asked for a physical address. We used the RVPark we were staying in.

RE: Step Rugs

Like Gary F, we use the same type. But we used our first set for nearly 2 years and they never showed signs of wear, just flattened out some. Just bought a new set for the new 5er.

RE: For my fellow full-timers and our Veterans

During our stay near DC last year, we visited the WWII and Viet Nam memorials. DH has a SeaBee front tag (FL only has rear tags) and use VietNam Vet holder surrounding it. DH gets Thank You's throughout the year for his service when people notice his tag. It was only 4 years, but since he volunteered to serve and even volunteered for VietNam when he could have sat it out, I've always been very proud of him.

RE: why do day/night shades get such a bad rap?

Rather than continue to send blinds off to restring, we replaced all of ours with honeycomb up/down shades in our last 5er. They were much better insulators in the extreme heat and cold.
On our 2009, they will be replaced once the strings start shredding. There's too much air infiltration on sides and bottoms.

RE: DNS service from either Sat company (Dish or DirectTV)

Some people have faxed over their waiver with RV registration. I think I've seen the DirecTV fax # listed on here as well as Escapees Forum. We did ours by mail over 2 years ago and it took a follow-up phone call.

RE: Please help me stay warm!

There are new elec heaters at Lowes and they are filled with a gas something, that heats up , doesnt burn, just heats way up. They are guaranteed to heat 400 sq ft...
We have one of the Oil filled, looks like a radiator. It stays on all winter in the living room. I turn it up during the day and down at night. It's quiet, no fans and helps us use less propane. :B

RE: Thanksgiving Plans

Last year (and looks like this year, too) we were too far from our 5 children and 10+ GC's to enjoy a big family dinner. It was our first all alone in forever!
I used our Flavorwave oven to cook the smallest turkey we could find. DH sawed the still frozen turkey in half outside and it cooked up perfectly. The 2nd half went back in the freezer to wait for Christmas dinner.
This also kept the Micro/Convection open for other dishes. Pumpkin pie is always made in advance since it tastes better cold with lots of cool whip!

RE: Using TC as Construction Base of Operations-Photos

We don't have photos since they are all packed up and at our daughters. But we pulled a 13' TT into our back yard in OR and tore down an ancient house and rebuilt it back in 1979.
TT didn't even have a workable potty, so we kept bathroom and part of kitchen in tact in the house. Nothing like taking a shower in a tub under the stars! Fun times with 3 boys all under the age of 6 and one was in diapers.

You're in the right place. I've always said, when it's the right thing for you, everything will fall into place.
We also move from project to project and have been doing it for the last 3+ years. I quit my job in 2003 and couldn't be happier! Have had some great adventures and looking forward to many more.

RE: Condensation

We had condensation problems in NC with a 2005 single pane 5er and had to sop up the water every morning. It was partly because we were parked under large trees and the sun rarely hit us.
But it wasn't too bad with a 2006 dual pane 5er. Only a little buildup on the windows by our beds. Just breathing creates moisture! Using space heaters seems to help, but I also keep the temps fairly low and usually only run the furnace during the night and early morning.
Some RVers use a dehumidifier, but it got so dry last winter in VA, I had to use a humidifier in the bedroom to prevent nightime nose bleeds.
